GBIS/Boiler Upgrade Scheme
Most energy efficiency grants are targeted at the most vulnerable households in the UK. However, even households that don’t fall into this category may still need support in improving the energy efficiency of their home. For these households, grants such as the Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) and the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) may be suitable. Through these schemes you could receive full or partial funding towards insulating or installing energy efficient heating systems in your home.
The Great British Insulation Scheme
The Great British Insulation Scheme (GBIS) is an initiative created by the UK government in partnership with the largest energy suppliers. Sheffield homeowners and tenants may be eligible for support to receive a full or part funded insulation measure (such as wall or roof insulation) if your property both:
- has an energy performance certificate (EPC) of D to G – GOV.UK: Check your EPC
- is in Council Tax bands A to D – GOV.UK: Check your Council Tax band
As there are no other financial criteria, you may be eligible for this scheme even if you don’t qualify for other schemes. However, if you’re a tenant you will need to secure permission from your landlord before any work can commence.
How to apply

Local installers may also be able to secure GBIS funding from energy suppliers and may approach local households to offer you measures or advertise on social media. All legitimate installers must abide by the Government’s Trustmark standards
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a government-led initiative to improve the energy efficiency of the nation’s homes through replacing boilers with new, energy efficient alternatives.
Through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, you could receive up to £7,500 of funding towards replacing the boiler in your home with an air or ground source heat pump, or £5,000 towards a biomass boiler.
To be eligible for this scheme, you must own the property that is receiving the upgrade and be replacing a fossil fuel heating system. If your property runs on a low-carbon heating system, you will not be eligible for any upgrades. However, you can still be eligible even if you have received other energy efficiency measures through another government grant scheme.
Your property must also have received an EPC survey in the past 10 years. If you haven’t, your installer may be able to carry one out for you before commencing any upgrade works.
How to apply
If you meet the above requirements, you will be eligible to apply for funding through the BUS. To apply, take the following steps:
1. Contact suitable MSC Certified Installers and get multiple quotes for the work.
2. Confirm your eligibility with your installer.
3. Accept the best quote for you.
Your installer will apply on your behalf and any applicable grants will be subtracted from the final cost of the installation.
